Oregon Educational Technology Standards Shaping Our Future

I believe that the Oregon Educational Technology Standards (OETS) are trying to prepare our future with the future. We are living in the digital world and we must accept it. It is inevitable that as adults students will become employed and will require some sort of technology knowledge. Second of all and most importantly these standards are trying to create opportunities to expand our minds and make connections. These standards will allow students to become creative in generating new ideas. At this moment students are limited on what they can do. Students will be able to interact with other cultures as well as their peers. Students will be able to evaluate information and report results. There are various ways for students to explore solutions. These standards will teach students how to become responsible and make appropriate decisions when using technology. Digital citizenship we be the overall big picture that the standards are trying to accomplish.

First of all I would begin with identifying the role of Digital citizenship. I would model to the students the importance of practicing safe, legal, and responsible usage of technology. I would give examples of what could happen if students did not follow these practices. Due to the economy our resources and opportunities are limited, however, with technology, communication and collaboration would be endless. I know that the school where I work at, fieldtrips are becoming a thing of the past. I would use tools like tokbox and skype to have guest speakers present for my students. Diversity projects I would invite students from another state or country to speak about their culture. These are just some examples of how the standards would create opportunities for students’ to expand their minds.

I think the biggest challenge would be the fears some administrators and teachers would have who are not as knowledgeable about technology. I think their fear would be that students’ information would be open to all on the web. I feel that the support would be limited. Another challenge would be lack of support and computers in some schools. Technology is obviously an important tool for teaching; I just hope that everyone jumps on board.

Multimedia Project

I think 4Shared is one great tool to store information There are many things one can use it to store files, music, photos, and videos. However, I found that the tool Screentoaster, which we used to demo 4Shared was an even greater experience. I enjoyed using the screetoaster to present and explain the different uses of 4Shared. I found 4Shared as being a great tool for the classroom geared for older students. For instance, sharing assignments for peers to reflect on eachothers papers.

Analyzing Student Data in a Spreadsheet

I used spreadsheets for the first time and found it to be a wonderful tool for my future as a teacher. You are able to gather and analyze information to see averages and progress. Below is a spreadsheet showing the test scores of students who tested below average compared to the whole class.

Below is a graph showing the comparisons of the students which gives the teacher a better analysis of the progress and the decrease in scores for each student. This is a wonderful tool that I will definately use as a classroom teacher. It provides you more information rather than just numbers. My analysis of the student data graph is that the majority of the students show progress. I also notice that Katherine’s test scores are sporadic. Her test scores jump 60 points then decreases 20 points, meanwhile Charles shows steady progress.

SKYPE

I played around with skype and appreciated all the features it had. I think it is a wonderful way to communicate with loved ones, especially those who are not close by. It is a great way to chat with your family and friends. I also believe this tool is a great way to collaborate with students, fellow teachers, and parents. I would use it to connect with other teachers and have my classroom experience other classrooms all over the world.

My Favorite Web 2.0 Tools

Web 2.0 tools is web-based meaning that your software and files can be retrieved from where ever and whenever. So you don't have to have your own personal computer with you to access your files. There are various applications that one can use, from word processing to presentations. The possibilities are endless. As an educator this will be a great tool. I can create and or retrieve my software and files where ever I get my inspiration so that I may be constantly updating and implementing the technology in my classroom. This tool will definately cut time and hopefully stress.

One of the tools that I browsed was Scribbler. This tool is a interactive white board that you can use as a collaboration tool for brainstorming with co-workers or other educators from another city, state or even country. Scribblar offers a great way to use live audio, chat, uploading, and sharing and learning tools.
The second tools that I browsed is the TokBox. TokBox is a audio/video recording tool. The possibilities are endless with this tool. You are able to send video emails, post interviews or resume bio, post a speech and you can host a video conference with up to 20 people. I can definately see my self using this tool with my classroom. I can envision my students posting their speeches and having video conferences with other classrooms.
